Synopsis

This film depicts the lives of two bike couriers during a delivery in Paris. Omar and Marwen are both foreigners and came to France to pursue their dreams. They find themselves pedaling to survive. Through this intimate double portrait, we discover the everyday life of many young students, but also fathers, who risk their necks in order to get by in a new economic system.

Tënk's opinion

The disconcerting artlessness of this first film makes it true cinema. It’s as though the director had assimilated all the theory and then played around with it freely, clearly and immediately. “La Guerre des centimes” with its shaky, grainy images from a video camera from another era, before 2019, works brilliantly with the dramatisation.
There are the dates and times displayed on the screen itself, giving us timescale references and then losing us, whether or not this is on purpose. There’s the art of flashback via an interposed video watched on a phone, isolating a character from the action and emphasising his solitude. There are captions incorporated into the action – posters, evocative slogans, commentaries on the film itself. And then the literally magic split-screen the director uses to split himself incomprehensibly in two in a second…
And it’s all discreet, creating a harrowing, poignant film.
