In a prestigious hotel school, Luca learns the art of service. How much of his own freedom and adolescence must the young man give up to work at serving customers?
At a prestigious catering school in northern Italy, the film follows an academic year during which a small, picaresque army gives its best in endless role-playing to master the art of serving customers. Director Davide Maldi pursues his analysis of adolescence as the decisive age in the construction of the self, and after “Frastuono”, devoted to passion for music and a generation’s dashed hopes, he focuses on the role of school, which can make us choose a training course in which being a servant will become daily practice. Between Ermanno Olmi’s icy coldness and Marco Bellocchio’s rage, this film starts by observing reality and then reworks it in a process of exchange with the young protagonists themselves, bringing a breath of fresh air to Italian cinema’s imagination. A timeless movie that tells us more about the cultural plundering of our time than any other.
