At the foot of Vesuvius, the celebration of Our-Lady-of-the-Hens is still tinged with paganism. While Fonzino prepares a ritual altar, Biagio leads the femminielli, the transgender masters of a cult where dance and song have a cathartic energy.

Tënk's opinion

In Pagani, ancient and modern and the sacred and the profane come together in the rituals of the Feast of the Madonna delle Galline, a throwback to an ancestral popular religiosity free of individualism, with a strong sense of community that clashes with the individualism of today’s society. Elisa Flaminia Inno’s camera speaks to us of this community’s marked sense of belonging through its characters. Among them, Fonzino, the councillor who directs the people building the Tosello, the ancient place of worship of the venerated Virgin, with ancestral songs and dances, and Biagino, who leads the group of “femminielli” from the LGBT community, androgynous figures in the Neapolitan cultural tradition said to bring luck and magic. An evocative cross-section via an immersive experience into a timeless world of ancient rituals and traditions light years away from our globalised culture…
