In the early 1960’s, Loan, a young Vietnamese woman, and Pierre, her Eurasian husband, are relocated to a village in Auvergne, under a resettlement program for French nationals from Indochina. Loan believes that the situation is only temporary and that she will return soon to Vietnam.

Tënk's opinion

After France’s defeat at Ðiện Biên Phủ, the dream of Indochina was over. The French Indochinese, most of them offspring of French soldiers or civil servants and Vietnamese women, were repatriated. On arrival, these French people who were discovering France for the first time were housed in special centres including the one in Noyant d’Allier in rural Auvergne. Director Stéphane Ly-Cuong invites us into one of these former miners’ cottages to the home of Loan and Pierre, a disillusioned young couple. Loan has only one dream – to return home and once again enjoy the taste of nuoc mâm. Pierre works hard as a labourer to make up for what they left behind. Their life in France extends well beyond 17th April 1975, the day Saigon was liberated, and bears all the hopes and disappointments of a generation.
