Nadja, a young Yugoslav American student, lives in the Cité Universitaire de Paris complex, in the Maison de l’Allemagne. We follow her as she wanders around the capital’s different neighbourhoods.
A Yugoslav American in Paris: Nadja flits around town on a geographical journey, where she adapts, chameleon-like to every place she comes across. With her short hair, relaxed grace and charming accent, she’s a typical New Wave character. But this focus on femininity also seems to foreshadow Rohmer’s “Comedies and Proverbs” from the 1980s, a series of films from a female perspective. With the narration undoubtedly inspired by the process of “Persian Letters” – impressions from a foreign perspective – it’s obviously a dual portrait that takes shape, the portrait of the student and that of the capital. But a third portrait is gradually woven into the movie – that of a man captivated by young women and the streets of Paris.
